Music MauritiusMauritius enjoys a genre of music known as the sega. Sega music is enjoyed by most Mauritians on the island; it has origins that are deeply laced in Mauritius history. It is believed that sega was a way that slaves of Mauritius past used to relieve their hard day’s work toiling in the sugar cane fields serving in order to make their master ever more wealthier, as was the case in many parts of the African continent as with other commodities such as chocolate, rubber, or in the case of Mauritius it was sugar. Sega is enjoyed by Mauritians as well as Bollywood, Bhojupuri, and Chinese songs. It can be said that the youth of Mauritius don’t limit themselves to a genre of music but exercise their choice by enjoying music from an array of themes, such as rock, metal, reggae, Hindi, etc. |
