The Agalega Island consist of two islands (North Island and South Island). The twin islands have a combined land area of 2600 hectares (70km2). The North island is 1.5 km long and 12.5 km wide, and South Island is 7 km long and 4.5 km wide. The islands lie 1100km (700miles) north of Mauritius (10°25′S, 56°35′E). The North island is where the Capital ‘Vingt Cinq Village’ is located and has a landing strip. The islands have a combined population of 300. The highest point of the islands is at Colline D'Emerez (North Island). One of its main exports is coconuts (Cocos nucifera) and its derivatives.
Late December 2006, the newspaper Times of India reported that the Indian government had received a offer during negotiations for a bilateral trade pact to develop the island as as a tourist destination for high income holidayers.
